About Pangea Aerospace:

We are a company dedicated to developing advanced propulsion systems for the space industry based on three key principles: high efficiency, sustainability, and reusability. We are revolutionizing the space industry with ground-breaking innovations that allows us to offer the best performance to cost propulsion systems.

Our goal is to be the propulsion provider for the next-generation of spacecraft, which are essential to meet the demands and compete in the booming space market of the next decade.

We are a passionate, multicultural, and multidisciplinary team pushing the boundaries of what it is possible in space propulsion technology.

We have already made history by successfully testing the world's first 3D printed Methalox Aerospike engine, marking a significant milestone for the space industry.

We are looking for talented professionals to join our international team in Barcelona and Toulouse. We want to be a key player in improving diversity in the Aerospace sector as, in Pangea, we believe that diversity (gender, age, race, sexual orientation, beliefs, disability, culture, etc.) is a key to success. Within Pangea, everyone can grow with the same opportunities. We encourage you to apply. Individually we are different, but together we are an amazing team!

We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineer in Barcelona.

About your job:

You will work with the design, assembly, soldering, and testing of electrical/mechatronic systems at Pangea. You will be involved with several varied projects, ranging from electrical wiring and setup of test benches and Data Acquisition Units, to the design, manufacture, and testing of novel mechatronic actuators (gimbals, valves, flaps, etc.), to soldering and assembly of breadboard avionics (PDUs, microcontroller boards, harnessing and wiring, etc.). As such some experience in mechanical design, on top of electrical design, is highly beneficial. This role is a practical role, as opposed to a strictly academic one, meaning that you would be expected to do the practical work personally, and you should have the relevant practical experience to do so confidently.

You would also be the one performing the physical integration and connection of electronics / avionics (e.g. Engine Control Units), delivered from e.g. external suppliers, to the rest of the propulsion system as well as performing the validation and testing afterwards to ensure proper integration and proper functioning / full readiness of the electrical systems. On top of this you could expect to also be involved with several varied test campaigns, being responsible for the overall proper functioning of the electrical systems (including on the test product and on the test bench) during the test.

The responsibilities will include, among others:

  • Design of mechatronic systems (including e.g. selection and placement of motors, bearings, gimbals, sensors, design of support structures, programming of control units, electrical layouts, etc.)
  • Manufacturing and assembly of the mechatronic prototypes
  • Assembly and soldering of electronics and power systems
  • Design and wiring of ground-installations for e.g. propulsion test benches
  • Setup and flashing of firmware onto microcontrollers for the proper functioning of peripherals such as e.g. CAN expanders, communication buses, telemetry units, actuators, sensors, embedded systems, mechatronic systems, etc.
  • Supporting the engine test campaigns
  • Supporting the design and optimization of Pangea Aerospace’s propulsion products, with a focus on its electrical systems/electronics

What you need to be successful:

  • European citizenship or European work visa
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering, similar or demonstrated equivalent experience
  • Practical experience in electronics soldering
  • Excellent knowledge of electronics and analog electrical circuits
  • Understanding of embedded systems and mechatronic systems (sensors, actuators, control units/microprocessors)
  • Experience of programming microcontrollers
  • Experience in working with firmware and flashing of firmware onto boards
  • Knowledge of digital/serial communication buses and protocols (e.g, CAN, RS-232, RS-485, SPI, I2C, etc.)
  • Programming skills in e.g. Python, Matlab, Octave etc., or in a similar high-level language; or alternatively in a low-level language such as C++, Java, FORTRAN, etc
  • Some CAD experience, preferably using Siemens NX
  • Fluency in English

Other usefull skills:

  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle avionics e.g. power distribution systems, flight avionics, spacecraft FCUs, etc
  • Experience in working with high-power or high-voltage systems
  • Relevant certificates to work with electrical installations
  • Experience in basic machining

Not hitting every requirement? Research suggests that some people tend to hesitate when it comes to job applications if they don't meet all the desired qualifications. Here at Pangea Aerospace, we're committed to fostering a workplace that values diversity, inclusivity, and authenticity.

So, if you're enthusiastic about this role but your prior experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification mentioned in the job description, we still strongly encourage you to apply. You might just be the ideal candidate for this position or other opportunities within our organization.
